Georges Méliès was born around december 188, he was most famous peace of work was a trip to the moon animation this was released on 1 September 1902 he used substation splices 

Winsor mccay was born September 26, 1869 his most famous piece of work was little nemo this was made in October 15, 1905 it ran for over 20years

Charlotte "Lotte" Reiniger made the animation The Adventures of Prince Achmed  she used the technique paper cut out. the film  

Persistence of vision

Persistence of Vision tricks your brain in thinking its a moving video but it is just still images playing after each other in a fast motion.

Stop motion animation

I have made an animation with Matthew we used the technique pixilation sequence. we used onion skin to give an idea of where we were in the frame before.
