HorrorIn this assignment i have took three different sources from the web and i have also took three sources from books. The three sources i have used from the internet are en.wikipedia.org, the scriptlab.com and literaryterms, comfirstly i went on the internet and searched for "what is horror" after i searched this i went on the wiki page. this shown me what horror fiction is, this helped me to understand what the horror genre is like i found the meaning here ""Horror is a genre of fiction which is intended, or has the capacity to frighten, scare, disgust, or startle their readers or viewers by including feelings of horror and terror. Literary historian J.A. Cuddon has defined the horror story as 'a piece of fiction in purpose of variable lengths... which shocks or even frightens the reader, or perhaps includes a feeling of repulsion or loathing". The horror film genre has a quite sinister feel to it. horror is produced to scare people through supernatural and none super natural.I then searched again and i found an article on www.thescriptlab.com. the article recommended people horror movies to watch. the article picked horrors that got you terrified but horrors that made you want to watch more. "A nightmare on elm street- Freddy Kruger, an evil being from another world, stalks a group of teenagers and kills them through there dreams, Saw- Two men are held hostage by a psychopath, who is set on teaching his victims the value of life by putting them into demented life or death games, and finally Friday the 13th- While trying to re-open a summer camp, a group of camp counselors are mysteriously murdered by a machete swinging slasher".The final website that i found when i searched was www.litraryterms.com and i then found all differenet types of horror movies. ""There is 'Gothic horrors' which is also known as Gothic fiction or fantasy, and is a dark style of fiction that combines horror and romanticism. 'supernatural horror' A supernatural horror is work of fiction that relies heavily on supernatural or paranormal elements to drive the story. 'non-supernatural horrors' a non-supernatural horror is a work of fiction that does not include supernatural elements, the terror of non-supernatural horror comes from the idea that what is happening in the story could plausibly occur in real life, 'Importance of horror' in what is often considered the most important essay on the horror genre ever written, 'supernatural horror in literature,' horror fiction author H.P Lovercraft begins by stating, 'the oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.” Accordingly, horror is important because it unearths an audience’s deepest nightmares and anxieties and truly pushes the limits of human emotion and fear. Appreciably, horror writers often employ topics and ideas that the everyday person would be apprehensive of addressing. The three sources that i used from the books were Mass Media, film, How To Make A film,In the books that i have found the writter talks about what a horror film. "In the book how to make a film" the writter wrote about some of the original horror movies such as "the exorcist" "ring" "the blair which project" and "the bride of Frankenstein" this list of movies are so iconic in the horror genre. In the book "film" the writter wrote about the genre of horror actually is "horror movies tap into our deepest fears and anxieties, and what is suggested is often more frightening than what is revealed. The German expressionist films of the 1920s, influenced by the English Gothic novel, were among the first examples of the genre". From reading this book it has enlightened me of what people want to see while watching a horrow movie or a horror tv show.Another book i read was about the genre of horror the book i read was "the mass media" book the writer wrote "The way researches study the media is affected by their theories out what is going on when people are exposed to the mass media. As thesa theories change so the methoda change too. We will begin this chapter with a brief overview, broadly chronological of the different theories about the interaction between the mass media and the audience that researches have had"

Understanding structure and funding in the film industry
During making a movie you have to go through five different stages to complete the process the first stage is Development the second is Pre Production, the third is production the fourth stage is Post Production, the last stage is Distribution.
Development
The first stage to the movie is development. This is where the concept for the movie begins. The person who has the idea will go to a company such as Disney, Warner brothers or Fox and pitch them the concept of the movie. However movie conglomerates might not accept your idea as it might not make as much money as another idea in this case you can go to a smaller company and do the same pitch.
Once your film is accepted you move onto the planning this includes script writing this is made with the online Adobe story https://story.adobe.com this website is the perfect tool to write a script as it has many features such as a front page and formatting each line.
the next step is to total up the cost to make up the movie. You need to think about the budget that the company your working with has gave you. If there is more than one movie been made you can take some of the profit made with DVD sales and box office sales. If the concept of the movie is solid then more money should be put into it. You can check this by looking at the creators work if this is the creators for piece of work then you can do research on the director. After this you will need to carry out research on the target audience for example you will need to look at the age range you are selling it out to, and the gender. Once you have figured out your audience you can focus on advertising to cater for there needs. for example if its a super hero movie you can sell costumes and toys.
Pre Production
Once development is done you move onto pre production. Pre production is where you start creating storyboards this gives the director inspiration. Story boards are drawn images that is just a drawing of the scene that you will be shot. The director and the camera men will be sorting out the camera angles that will be put into the film. You will also need to have the script wrote up by now as this is the most vital part of the film. You will also need to have audio such as music and sound effects, you will need to hire a composer to achieve this step. You will need to organize set locations, outfits, props and sets this will be done by the director or the production team.
Production
The next stage of the process is production, this is where you actually shoot the movie for this you will of needed to hire every single staff and actor needed. this process includes getting the set ready getting the props ready. The actors will be getting filmed in this process. This step normally lasts a while this is because normally on an average full 15 hour long day of filming you will be able to use three minutes of footage recorded. A normal movie lasts 95 minutes.
Post Production
This is the second from last step of the production, in this step you will put the whole movie together this is done on soft wares such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Apple Mac's Final Cut Pro, Avid Media Composer or Sony Vegas Pro. This step will include putting clips together from the filming you have done from the previous step it will also including sound effects and other audio based clips. Once the editor has gone through every single clip he will cut it done to about 90 minutes this is the average lasting time of a movie.
Distribution
The final stage of the production is distribution, after your movie is complete, your company that funded you for example Disney. your distributor will advertise your trailer and promotion clips. if your movie is big enough it will also have clothing, toys and merchandise. The company can also make movie posters this is another form of advertisements. once the advertisements have been made to hype up the film it will enter the box office it will then proceed to go in cinemas for a few months after the cinemas it will get released on DVDs or on a online version, then eventually it will hit Sky after sky it will go on normal TV such as ITV and Channel 4. After this it could go on online platforms such as Netflix or Amazon Prime etc.
There are many different ways for your movie to get funded. the first way to get funded is to give a company such as Disney or Warner Brothers your film concept if they want to use your film they will give you budget in return they will have rights to the film and have there name in the opening title sequence and they will also feature in the credits of the film. There are six main conglomerates who do this the six companies are called Disney,Universal, Warner Brothers, Sony, Paramount and 20th Century Fox. A conglomerate is a company that owns many other company's for example Disney own Pixar, Lucas Films and Marvel. The company that funds your film will get the money back from box office sales and DVD sales you will be able to buy the DVD after it comes out of the box office, the movie normally stays in for a few months. Another way the company gets the money is through online sales. The company only gets a percentage of the sales though you the creator will get the rest. The company will also decide if it goes onto online platform such as Netflix and Amazon Prime company put there movie on these platforms as this generates more money this is is because these platforms give you a cut of the monthly fees they get off there users. Some movies go onto TV platforms such as Sky this also generates money as Sky pay the company to be able to use the movie for there paying members. Another money maker is being able to buy your movie out for a certain price this is done by using apps like iTunes, Amazon market place, You tube and Google Play. Another way to make money is being able to rent the movie for a small price this is done with You Tube and ITunes. Movies also make money from other businesses advertising in films this can be drinking a coca cola can in a scene, coca cola will pay money for this scene to be shown. Selling Merchandise is another way to generate money this includes toys, posters, mugs and clothes.
TV shows get there money from two different ways the first way is from online platforming sites such as Netflix and Amazon Prime etc. Your TV show will be aired at a set date weekly or monthly how ever you set it up but the the platforming site will pay you for the rights of your show. The other way is through TV channels, all the money you get from TV channels will be from advertisements from other businesses that pays the channel to have a 30 seconds advert in the break of the show this is how you get the money on all channels except the BBC channels this generates its money through TV licensees. every single person who watches TV pays £150.00 a year this money goes to the BBC.

Job Roles
Director - The director dictates every thing you see on the screen as his word is final on the movie.
Script Writer - The script writer is the person who writes what is said within the film
Camera Man - the camera man is the person who records everything on set.
Producer - the producer is the person who manages everything behind the scenes from the budget to the schedule of of the workers and who sorts everyone's contracts
Management - the people who manage in the TV & film industry are people like accountants as they manage the budget and and the peoples salaries and the what is spent on the movie or the TV show
Creative - People who have creative job roles in the TV and film industry are people who will be pretty much just be in the pre production stage. The main job role for creative workers are the people who write the scripts.
Technical - The people who do the technical jobs are the people who handle the equipment of the tv show or movie this includes camera men, sound operators and camera men
Freelance - A freelancer is someone who is self employed an example of someone who is a freelancer is a graphic designer. So most producers get in contact with a freelancer and they ask if they could do work for the movie and the designer and the producer would work up a fee and the period of time the designer would work. freelancers don't normally have a long contract.

History of Editing
Film editing started from short films that were shot from one angle and one camera only. back then this was an amazing achievement but with one shot this meant there was no editing needed the first ever short film was made in the 1890s the longest films dint even reach a minute up until 1903 when the film "The great Train Robbery was made this film lasted 12 minutes long and it was the longest film ever made at this time. The film used brand new techniques that were never done before. The techniqes used were cross cutting, camera movement, doible exposure, composite editing and location shooting.
After this film cross cutting became the norm as it was a better way to edit your films. But the people who made the great train robbery never came up with this technique, there have been many theories that Frank Mottershaw created the technique with his film Daylight Burglary. The first ever people who started editing techniques were David Griffiths, Eisenstein and Lev Kuleshow.
Kuleshov was one of the first people to come up with theories about editing techniques. Kuleshov argues that when you are building a film it is the same as builing a house (Brick by Brick) this analogy is about shot by shot.
Einesstein was a student of Kuleshovs but they drifted apart because they had different ideas about film making. Einstein introduced the five methods from "word and image".
The first method is Metric this is where the editing follows a specific number of frames. and cutting to the next shot.
The second method is rhythmic
The third is Tonal
The fourth is over tanal
The final method is Intellectual
David Griffiths invented the editing techniques parallel editing and the classic hollywood style. he also used the 180 degree rule, the establishing shot and the reverse shot.
In the 1970s to the beginning of 1980s more video experiments were introduced like the Time Based correctors and digital video effects units. this is when digital got introduced. the first ever digital film that got made was called "Harry" but the technology could only make the film last up to 80 seconds of effects.
In 1991 Adobe introduced there first ever editing software called Adobe Premiere 1 this was only released for the Mac
At this stage of editing only TV commercials could be edited on computers this is because of hardrive capacity this stayed like this up untill the film "lets kill the lawyers" came out in 1991.
In 1993 a company called Media 100 came in and made leaps and bounds in Video compression
